Movies & TV

2022 promises a ton of new and returning shows to streaming services. Check out just a few that you might want to catch this year.

A Discovery of Witches Season 3

If you’re a fan of vampires and witches and romance between the two, you may already have been watching the first two seasons of A Discovery of Witches. Season 3 kicks off on January 7, bringing the two main characters (Diana and Matthew) back to the prest day after their time traveling to Elizabethan England in season 2.  This will be the final season, as it is in sync with the novel trilogy of the same name, by Deborah Harkness. You can catch it on Sundance Now.

Peacemaker

Wait, didn’t Peacemaker die in The Suicide Squad? Yes. Yes, he did. But, that’s no reason not to have a series about the movie’s charming, hilarious, and just awful character. John Cena is back in the role of the very over-the-top, ultra-bro take on Captain America. Director James Gunn is back at the helm as well, so we can expect the same ridiculous humor as the movie. This series will premier on HBO Max on January 13, 2022.

Star Trek: Picard Season 2

One of the streaming hits of 2021 was Picard on Paramount Plus, where we returned to the Star Trek universe to revisit fan-favorite characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The show focuses on the retired Federation starship captain, Jean-Luc Picard. In season 2, we’ll see more of Seven of Nine and get a return of Q from The Next Generation series. It should be another fun adventure for fans of the prior series while bringing in new fans to the Star Trek universe.  Picard season 2 is scheduled to release in February 2022.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

We’re back aboard the Enterprise! This new series goes back in time to before Captain Kirk as we follow Captain Pike and his crew as they ‘seek out new life and new civilizations. This is an offshoot of Star Trek: Discovery, which also continues on Paramount Plus. We don’t have a release date for this one yet, so set your sensors to maximum and stay tuned.

The Orville: New Horizons

If you want another sci-fi show that is really a slightly humorous homage to Star Trek, look no further than The Orville. Seth MacFarlane’s sendup of the Trek franchise comes back for a third season after having no episodes since 2019. You can follow the intrepid crew of the Orville on Fox starting on March 10, 2022.

The Lord of the Rings

Amazon has been working on this show for some time, but the release is finally imminent (if September 2, 2022, is imminent). This show will explore parts of Tolkein’s Middle Earth that have yet to see the screen. The series will take place thousands of years before The Hobbit, where we’ll discover different kingdoms, heroes, and villains. The expectations for this one are going to be sky-high.

Cool Shows to Stream in 2022

The Boys Season 3

While we don’t have a release date yet, we do know that Amazon Prime’s The Boys will return with season 3 in 2022. We’ll follow the very dark and often disturbing world where superheroes are manufactured like pop stars. Joining the cast this season will be a Soldier Boy, an obvious sendup of Captain America, who will likely not get along well with resident team leader and psychopath, Homelander. Stay tuned for an official release date soon.

House of the Dragon

Another highly anticipated series is on the way from HBO Max, with the prequel to A Game of Thrones called House of the Dragon. This series draws on the prequel book, Fire & Blood, to tell a story that takes place 150 years before GOT. The Targaryen Dynasty is on it’s 5th king and continues to rule the world with the support of its stable full of massive dragons. This one should be fun. No date has been announced so stay tuned.

Ms. Marvel

Meet Kamala Khan, a young girl who idolizes Captain Marvel. This will be her origin story, as she discovers her own powers. We don’t know much beyond that, or if Captain Marvel herself will make an appearance. However, this show will be a lead into 2023’s movie, The Marvels, which will feature Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rameau (from WandaVision). This should be the first show to hit the Disney Plus, by mid-2022.

Moon Knight

The series will introduce a new character to the MCU, Marc Spector (aka Moon Knight). Spector is a mercenary with dissociative identity disorder who is chosen by an Egyptian god to become the Moon Knight. Marvel fans have been clamoring for a Moon Knight show for years, but this is definitely a character that many people will have never heard of unless they are serious comic book fans. We’ll see how that goes and if this very odd character can win a place in the long-term MCU. No date is set for this Disney Plus series other than late 2022.

She-Hulk

This is actually set to be more of a comedy, as Jennifer Walters deals with being a lawyer who also happens to be She-Hulk after she gets a blood transfusion from her cousin - Bruce Banner. We’ll get to see Mark Ruffalo return as Banner/Hulk and Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany as Walters. This one should be a lot of fun. This Disney Plus series is planned for late 2022.

The Sandman

Netflix will be bringing us a live-action series based on Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel series, The Sandman. No date has been announced yet, but we can expect an ambitious take on the mythology of Gaiman’s comic book series. We’ll meet Dream (The Sandman), Destiny, Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, and Destruction as the show brings the incredibly popular comic series to the screen for the first time.
