The Witcher Season 2 on Netflix continues the story of Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer as we head toward a still somewhat uncertain climax. Let’s dig into episodes 5-6 today, and then we’ll save the final 2 episodes of the season (7-8) for next time.

Geralt Investigates the Monoliths

As the episode kicks off, Geralt has stepped through a portal to meet the sorcerer Istredd. He wants to get a better understanding of the monoliths and how they tie into Ciri’s power.

They travel to the ruins of the monolith that Ciri destroyed with her scream. This was back in Season 1 when she first escaped from the forces of Nilfgaard when they took control of Cintra.

As they investigate the ruins, they determine that the monoliths are gateways to another realm. When activated, they allow monsters to enter their world. As they are searching through the remains of the monolith, Ciri’s power activated it and allows a flying monster to enter their world.

Making More Witchers and a Prophecy Revealed

Back in Kaer Morhen, Vesemir and Triss have determined that Ciri has Elder Blood, which can be used to create a new generation of Witchers. Ciri agrees to help, as long as she becomes the first new Witcher.

Before the transformation to a Witcher begins, Triss takes Ciri through a ritual to help her understand the source of her power. But, what it reveals is that a child of the Elder Blood will destroy the world. Triss is terrified, believing that Ciri is destined to tear the world apart.

As Ciri comes to terms with her new understanding of the prophecy, she asks Vesemir to begin her transformation into a Witcher. He is hesitant and waits just long enough for Geralt to arrive and stop the procedure.

The Witcher Season 2 - Episodes 5-6 Recap

Yennefer Makes a Deal with the Deathless Mother

Meanwhile, Yennefer has tracked down Jaskier and rescued him from the fire mage, Rience.

But, as they flee, she is captured by the city guard. In desperation, she agrees to the deal the Deathless Mother has been offering. She can have her power back if she just brings Ciri to a location near Cintra. The Deathless Mother then transports her away from the guard.

The Fire Mage

Rience has determined that his ultimate goal is to find Ciri and he learns that Geralt has taken her to the Temple of Melitele to learn more about her power. He gathers a group of mercenaries to attack the temple and kidnap Ciri.

In the Temple, Ciri begins working on how to unlock her power but has little success. Geralt then runs into Yennefer, who has been transported to the Temple by the Deathless Mother to kidnap Ciri. They have a nice reunion as Yennefer discovers that Ciri is Geralt’s “child surprise” and now effectively his adopted daughter. This clearly gives her pause, but she is so desperate to get her powers back that she still plans on going through with her plan.

Rience then attacks, but Geralt arrives and begins dispatching his mercenaries. Yennefer and Ciri lock themselves in a room, as the fire mage begins melting the door from the outside. Yennefer tells Ciri that she can help her use her magic to help them escape and she teaches her how to open a portal.

As they escape through the portal, Geralt has finished off the last of the mercenaries and forced Rience to teleport away. Yennefer looks back at Geralt but still runs off witih Ciri.

We’re in for an exciting conclusion over the next two episodes.
