Whatever generation you were born into or even your own personal style, the hoodie is a clothing item that has a place in just about any man’s closet. While they may have originally been thought of as athletic apparel, today a hoodie is an incredibly versatile piece of casual clothing. It is still great when you’re heading to the gym or basketball court, but it’s equally at home as a light jacket or mid-layer if you’re prepped for some temperature changes. A good hoodie is comfortable and many are wearable like a light sweater, as opposed to just outerwear.
But, when it comes to hoodies, guys have a LOT of options. Because it has become so ubiquitous in men’s fashion, the range of options in terms of style, weight, and overall structure give us a lot to choose from. So, here’s a bit of a buyer’s guide to help you find the perfect hoodie for you.
To Zip or Not to Zip
If there’s a philosophical question around hoodies, this is it. You will find options that are full-zip, partial-zip, and no-zipper (pullover). Which one is the best? I had a friend recently post this question on social media and there were a surprising range of answers and reasons behind each choice. It probably just goes to show how people use their hoodies in different ways.
The full-zip option is my go-to. Personally, I like how easy it is to put on and take off, without messing up my hair. Yup, a pure vanity rationale there. But, I stand by it. But, I also just like the ease of grabbing one and putting it on.
However, I also own quarte-zip and no-zipper hoodies. (OK, maybe I have too many hoodies. Is that possible?) I just use them a bit differently. They are great for colder days when I don’t plan to take off my hoodie very often. I also have one or two that I wear to and from the gym, since messing with my hair isn’t an issue (I wear a baseball hat to the gym anyway).
Thickness and Weight
I have hoodies that run from very lightweight to fairly heavy. For me, the rationale is that I kind of like having them be useful year round. So, I like a lighter hoodie for the spring and fall, or just to wear around the house. But, I also really appreciate a heavier weight hoodie when it gets cold out.

This is also another brand that makes their hoodies in the U.S. (in Middlesex, NC). It has side panels that help provide more mobility, while still having a stylish, body-skimming fit.
