Skincare

As I grow older, I notice that the skincare products I once used no longer work for my skin, so it is time to switch up the routine. As hard as it was departing from my old faithfuls, I knew it was time as I began to see my skin change for the worst.

I have dry-to-oily skin prone to white and blackhead breakouts. Following a ton of research, these are the new products I have chosen to enhance my skin care routine. Included is a bit of information on the products as well as a review from my own experience.

If you have skin like mine, these might be the products for you!

Niacinamide

Beauty gurus everywhere rave about the benefits of Niacinamide — from building keratin in the skin to keep it firm and healthy to treating hyperpigmentation and minimizing fine lines. This is definitely a product you should have in your skincare regimen. Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that helps hydrate skin, promote skin elasticity, decrease redness and blotchiness and act as an antioxidant. It is generally a gentle ingredient and is adaptable to all skin types. This product can be used as a serum before bed after cleansing or in the morning.

My experience with niacinamide has been great. I use it at night with my gua sha tool and in the morning I immediately notice a decrease in puffiness as well as an even skin tone. I use The Ordinary Niacinamide Serum. While there are many other serums out there as well as skin care products including the ingredient, this one works best for me. I like it because I can include it with my long-term skincare products that have proven results for my skin type.

Cerave Salicylic Acid Cleanser

Let’s start with what salicylic acid is as an ingredient. Salicylic acid belongs to a class of drugs called salicylates. The ingredient helps the skin shed dead skin cells from the top layer as well as decrease redness and inflammation. It helps unclog blocked pores and break down sebum in order to decrease breakouts. Salicylic acid is a type of chemical exfoliant called beta hydroxy acid or BHA which comes from willow tree bark. It specifically helps treat stubborn blackheads and whiteheads because it penetrates the skin and exfoliates beneath the surface.

I just started this product about 3-weeks ago and am already seeing results. As someone with blackhead and whitehead-prone skin, I have run through many products in search of a way to rid my skin of these stubborn pustules once and for all! My biggest advice for using this product or any product with salicylic acid is to not give up on it. Upon first use you might notice dryness of skin or an increase in breakouts — I can assure you that this is just your skin adapting to the product and going through a purge stage. Purging of the skin is when skin turnover rate is occurring quickly causing under the skin blemishes to rise to the surface. Give it time, they will go away! I have had a few breakouts from the product already, but despite them, noticed great improvement.

Hydro-Stars Patches

If you have ever seen someone (specifically a younger person), with random star patches on their face, I promise, it is not a fashion statement or special makeup — it is a Starface patch, also known as Hydro-Stars. Hydro-Stars are all the new craze with the younger generation as they are both cute and healing for acne blemishes. The patches are hydrocolloid bandages used to treat topical wounds and protect zits from bacteria while simultaneously sucking out the fluid. They have proven to reduce inflammation of pimples overnight. The patches stick on and are shaped to grip the face perfectly while also looking cute. Not only does it remove the blemish but they also help prevent scarring and hyperpigmentation. To start, you should have a freshly cleaned face. Leave on for a minimum of 6-hours or overnight.

For me, this product has been a great addition to my skincare routine, because not only do they help reduce blemishes but they are also super cute. I have gotten many confused stares from people not knowing what is on my face thus resulting in a bit of an awkward explanation of the monstrous zit on my face. I cannot deny that I prefer a cute yellow star on my face over a red monster. Bonus points for healing the zit on my face!
