Paloma Schneideman's first feature film "Big Girls Don't Cry" paves the way for two notable talents, Schneideman herself and film debutante Ani Palmer. The film vividly captures the turbulent and exploratory journey of 14-year-old Sid, who yearns for social approval and sexual understanding amidst rural New Zealand's summer holidays. It's a production by A Wave in the Ocean, an initiative steered by film veteran Jane Campion.

Schneideman's discerning chronicle paints a strong portrait of Sid's unsettled search for acceptance. The drama captures palpable scenes of chaotic intimacy and the harsh reality of adolescence, boasting fantastic performances led by Palmer, Rain Spencer and Noah Taylor.

The film is set in 2006, a time when cell phones were primitive and dial-up internet defined teenage communication. Sid resides in a secluded coastal area of New Zealand's North Island with her inattentive and volatile father, Leo. As her summer holidays begin, Sid, fuelled by her online adventures in sex chat rooms, embarks on a pursuit for sexual knowledge, acceptance and cool-girl status among older girls.

Sid's journey leads her into the party scene in the nearby beach town of Ōmaha, where she desperately tries to climb the social ladder. However, this journey is not devoid of self-inflicted harm and deception. Quite significantly, she realises her attraction to girls, which adds yet another layer of complexity to her adolescent exploration.

One of the key characters in her journey is the American exchange student Freya. Sid is enthralled by Freya's charismatic aura and wisdom, sparking something within her. The friction between Sid and her father Leo provides one of the most engaging relationships in the narrative.

Beautifully captured by Schneideman with the aid of production designer Sarah Cooper and cinematographer Maria Ines Manchego, Big Girls Don’t Cry presents a scenic trip through the rural landscapes and the inner turmoil of adolescence, effectively making it a testament to a significant season in Sid's life.
