Carmen Maura's Stellar Performance in 'Calle Málaga'
- Oct 6, 2025
Carmen Maura, renowned Spanish actress celebrated for her successive collaborations with Pedro Almodóvar, delivers an intense performance in 'Calle Málaga'. Her honest portrayal of a strong woman reclaiming her freedom after a sudden loss of independence is a gripping sight.
The movie is a tribute by director Maryam Touzani to her grandmother, a Spanish expat who moved to Tangier, Northern Morocco, in the 1930s fleeing the Franco regime. Although 'Calle Málaga' doesn't accomplish the intricate subtlety of Touzani's critically acclaimed 'The Blue Caftan', it boasts of an intimate storyline, delicate nuances, and a compelling depiction by Maura.
In the film, Maura's character María Ángeles displays a sense of charming self-reliance as she goes about her lively routines in her home town Tangier. The scenes beautifully juxtapose her strong bond with her city and clash with her daughter Clara's plans to sell their Tangier apartment due to her ensuing financial struggles.
The discord between mother and daughter potently portrays the complexities of familial bonds and changing personal ties. María’s conflict and determination to stay in Tangier form the crux of the film’s narrative. María’s robust character refuses to submit and moves back to her emptied Tangier apartment, devising a fresh path for herself and turning her hardship into an opportunity.

A tenderly shot romantic layer and a candid celebration of María’s sexuality add depth and charm to the narrative. Director Maryam Touzani's sense of detail and sensitivity breathes life into every frame, particularly in presenting the nuances of a character’s connections with their physical surroundings.
Despite apparent differences, a thread of compassion blooms in multiple relationships, providing room for redemption and revelations. The film ends on an ambiguous note, adding to its authenticity and veering away from the cliched happy ending.
Thanks to Virginie Surdej's impressive cinematography, the film’s visuals paint a captivating picture of María Ángeles' deep-rooted love for her birthplace. Other performances, especially from Ahmed Boulane, meet high standards, but it is Maura's sincere acting – her effortless charm, wittiness, and strong spirit – that stands out.
