Classic Novel Charlotte's Web Receives Mixed Review on HBO Max's New Animated Adaptation
- Oct 8, 2025
E.B. White's Charlotte's Web has charmed generations of children and remains a classic in children's literature. Its recent adaptation on HBO Max, however, struggles to leave its mark. Produced by Sesame Workshop, this three-part animated series features dull CG animation, an inconsistent voice cast, and unnecessary narrative fillers. Despite these setbacks, the moving conclusion of the story reminds audiences of the timeless appeal of White's narrative.
In this Yurie Rocha-directed animation, the plot is still about Wilbur the piglet's struggle to avoid the typical fate of livestock. Despite some fanciful moments and the heartwarming friendship between the barn animals, the voice cast, including Amy Adams as Charlotte the spider, delivers a performance that lacks depth and inspiration.

The animation from Toronto's Guru Studios is mixed, with the animals rendered serviceably, yet the human characters appearing waxy and weightless. The farm background could easily be mistaken for stock images, giving the overall animation a cheap look. It appears to attempt the gloss of big-budget animations from studios like Disney or Illumination, but falls short.
The storyline has been expanded, but not necessarily improved, with extraneous subplots and elements that don't really enhance the original story. Despite these criticisms, the tale's poignant conclusion resonates, reminding viewers of the enduring charm of the original tale. This new adaptation may not live up to the original, but it doesn't completely tarnish its legacy either.
