This year, various queer shows like "Overcompensating" and "Boots" have captivated us. Yet, they somewhat lack the boldness reminiscent of the new queer cinema era. Unlike previous years, where shows like AMC's "Interview with the Vampire" and Showtime's "Fellow Travelers" exemplified queer narratives, recently, television series have succumbed to conservative tropes. However, Crave, a Canadian production company, has countered this shift, demonstrating that daring queer television is possible when creators and actors give their all.

"Heated Rivalry," inspired by Rachel Reid's best-selling novel, centers around Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams), a Canadian ice hockey player, and his tense rivalry turned intense friends-with-benefits relationship with Russian player Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie). The series boldly dives into the romance between these two popular athletes, offering an animated insight into their quickly escalating relationship.

Creator and director Jacob Tierney opt to break away from typical romance tropes, pushing the characters into a fiery romance that keeps queer audiences enticed. The rapid pace of storytelling, coupled with the clandestine nature of Shane and Ilya’s meetings, gives the series a riveting edge.

"Heated Rivalry" stands apart due to its emphasis on characters' sexual chemistry. The show highlights the dynamics of gay sex and the inherent power play that ensues, an essential feature that most series shy away from. The emotional gravity of their secret relationship, weighed down by their professional sports careers, also adds to the robust narrative.

Both Williams and Storrie brilliantly bring their characters to life, adding a sense of authenticity to the narrative. As Shane Hollander, Williams' nuanced performance is remarkable, his microexpressions perfectly revealing his buried emotions without the need for words.

The series breaks away from being categorized as a merely sex-driven show. It delves into the issues of homophobia and racism prevalent in the sporting world, resulting in conflicted protagonists reluctantly living double lives. The tension and thrill of their secret encounters play out with a background score that enhances the overall viewing experience.

"Heated Rivalry" has catapulted into an incredibly important and enjoyable show of the year, boldly showcasing queer sexuality. Its provocative allure combined with the intense on-screen chemistry between Williams and Storrie makes the series significant, proving once again that daring storytelling in queer narratives can surpass restrictive, conservative expectations. "Heated Rivalry" is now available for streaming on HBO Max.
