Larry David Returns to HBO with Humorous Take on American History
- Aug 5, 2025
Famous for his distinctively eccentric comedic wit, Larry David is set to return to HBO. In collaboration with Jeff Schaffer, the long-time showrunner, executive producer, and director on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” David is working on a six-episode sketch comedy limited series that takes a light-hearted dig at American history. The show, which David will also star in, reunites him with many "Curb" co-stars and introduces new guest stars.
This joint venture is produced by both David and Schaffer, with Schaffer also stepping into the director’s role. The executive production teams in the series also include Barack and Michelle Obama under their Higher Ground Productions, and Vinnie Malhotra and Ethan Lewis.
Former President Obama humorously remarked on the experience: "I’ve interacted with challenging leaders around the globe and dealt with complex problems, yet nothing could quite prepare me for working with Larry David."
The eventual cast details await further announcement. As per the official series description, David was drawn into the project when the Obamas expressed desire to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary and its unique history.
David jocularly commented on his return to television, stating his allergic reaction to celebration foam and the loss of his organic honey-producing bees spurred this move.

The new HBO series adds to David's robust television presence on the network. "Curb Your Enthusiasm" premiered for eight seasons from 2000 to 2011 and later continued with additional seasons, receiving significant critical and audience praise.
Jeff Schaffer outlined the characters' function in obstructing history rather than changing it. “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and its 55 Emmy nominations across 12 seasons stand testament to his productive work with David.
Known for their prior work on “Seinfeld” and “Clear History,” and other popular shows like “The League” and “Dave,” David and Schaffer's collaboration promises to offer another unforgettable comic experience.
Higher Ground Productions, responsible for other scripted TV projects like the Netflix shows “The Altruists,” and “All the Sinners Bleed,” will also contribute its unique touch to the series.
