Employing atmospheric visuals reminiscent of Michael Mann classics like Thief and Heat, director Joe Carnahan crafts an engaging experience in his new Netflix thriller, "The Rip". Headlined by renowned actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who also produced the film under their Artists Equity banner, the film is not merely a derivative of past crime thrillers, but rather a fresh addition to the genre buoyed by a talented cast and a suspense-filled storyline teeming with paranoia and unexpected twists.

Drawing inspiration from true incidents, the film's narrative unfolds amidst the nocturnal expanse of Miami. It begins with a thrilling prologue involving Jackie Velez (Lina Esco), the Miami-Dade narcotics division captain, meeting an untimely end while attempting to rescue a woman in danger. Following Velez's death, Damon's character Lt. Dane Dumars, her successor, and Sgt. J.D. Byrne (Affleck), Dane's old friend, enter the fray. Amidst allegations of corruption, budget cuts, and the stifling of the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team, a sense of mistrust permeates the storyline, fuelling the duo's determination to uncover the truth behind Velez's murder.

In moments of reprieve from the relentless interrogations and investigations, Dane unveils a crime-stopper tip about a drug cartel's stash house. An elaborate scheme unfolds leading to the discovery of $20 million, raising suspicions and testing loyalties within the department. Anonymous threats add to the tension, implying the millions as a bait and forewarning of a fatal chase ensuing if the money is stolen. Continued ambiguity surrounding the destination of the money keeps the viewers hooked, while the film critically sheds light on the entwined nature of law enforcement and drug trafficking.

The stunning performances of Damon and Affleck, combined with Carnahan's adept direction, moody visuals and Shorter's stirring score ensure a riveting watch. Despite being familiar tropes to crime thrillers, the film's portrayal of tension, car chases and action sequences are convincing, making it a compelling addition to Netflix’s original content.
