What Else is New?

The controller has been redesigned quite a bit since its PS4 predecessor, with adaptive triggers (offering variable resistance for finer tuned gaming experiences), a built-in mic, and stronger haptic effects. Other reviews have called the new controller "a game-changer." The larger central touchpad will likely come into play in future games as well. Some of the button configurations may take a bit of getting used to, but overall, it's a very comfortable and powerful handheld controller.

UI and Settings

There haven't been too many changes to the PS4 menu or settings options. So, expect the interface to be fairly familiar when you fire up your new console.

Native Games

That's right, the PS5 comes with a pre-installed game. This is a bit of an old-school nod to long ago gaming consoles, but it means you'll have something to play right out of the box, without buying any other games. Astro's Playroom is the name of the pre-installed game and it really functions as a demo for all of the controller's new functions.

The New Games

The early next-gen games are looking good. They take advantage of the power powerful processor and graphics capabilities, but you may have to pick between graphics options that deliver either a brighter/shinier world or smoother animation. You can try both modes and pick the one you like best.

Early reviews on Godfall, Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales suggest many hours of absorbing gameplay in your future.

PS4 Games

Yes indeed, the PS5 offers backward compatibility, so all those PS4 games in your library can be pulled over to the PS5 and played with your saved files. However, some of the downloading is reported to take a bit of time (possibly days) so show a bit of patience. According to various reviews, almost all PS4 games will play on the PS5 from day 1, with a few outliers likely coming down the road.

Is it Worth the Pricetag?

That's always the question with a new console. Is it worth the money? The answer gets harder the higher the price and the PS5 comes at a steep price of $500 for the console edition. The digital edition starts at $399. Of course, even at that price, unless you have one on pre-order, getting your hands on a PS5 any time soon will be challenging. The new games available at release are great, but there aren't a ton of them just yet. So, if you want to hold off a bit (or have no choice because of no inventory) you will likely get a much better game library to choose from as more titles are released.
