The 95th Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars, took place on March 12, 2023. The ceremony was at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, and was broadcasted live on ABC.

Some of the biggest names in Hollywood gathered to celebrate the year's best films and performances. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the show began with a hilarious opening monologue. It poked fun at the various nominees and the controversies that surrounded some of the films.

As always, the night was full of surprises and upsets. Some of the predicted frontrunners lost out to unexpected winners. Here's a quick recap of some of the key moments and winners from the 2023 Oscars.

Best Picture

In one of the biggest surprises of the night, the Best Picture award went to "The Father," directed by Florian Zeller. The film, which stars Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, tells the story of a man struggling with dementia and his daughter's attempts to care for him. Despite being one of the lesser-known nominees, "The Father" received critical acclaim for its poignant and powerful portrayal of a difficult subject.

Best Director

The award for Best Director went to Chloe Zhao for "Nomadland," making her the first woman of color to win the award in Oscar history. "Nomadland" also won Best Picture at the Golden Globes and the Critics' Choice Awards, cementing its status as one of the year's most celebrated films.

Best Actor

In another surprise upset, the Best Actor award went to Rami Malek for his performance in "No Time to Die," the latest installment in the James Bond franchise. Malek played the film's villain, Safin, and impressed audiences and critics alike with his nuanced and menacing portrayal.

Best Actress

The award for Best Actress went to Frances McDormand for her role in "Nomadland." This was McDormand's third Oscar win, following previous wins for "Fargo" and "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri." In "Nomadland," McDormand played a woman who embarks on a journey of self-discovery after losing everything in the Great Recession.

Best Supporting Actor

The Best Supporting Actor award went to Jared Leto for his role in "House of Gucci." Leto played Paolo Gucci, a member of the famous fashion family who becomes embroiled in a scandal involving his cousin's murder. Leto's performance was praised for its humor and charm, as well as its darker moments.

Best Supporting Actress

The award for Best Supporting Actress went to Ariana DeBose for her role in "West Side Story." DeBose played Anita, a key character in the iconic musical. Her performance was praised for its energy, passion, and emotional depth.

  • Best Original Screenplay: "Licorice Pizza," written by Paul Thomas Anderson
  • Best Adapted Screenplay: "Dune," screenplay by Jon Spaihts, Eric Roth and Denis Villeneuve
