The Revamped "I Know What You Did Last Summer": A Mixed Bag
- Jul 23, 2025
"I Know What You Did Last Summer," a legacy sequel to the 1997 horror classic, attempts to reignite the audience's interest but falls short. This revamped film heavily borrows elements from its predecessor and doubles down on nostalgia, cramming the narrative with numerous Easter eggs. Ironically, these nostalgic elements are the most enjoyable parts of the new installment.
The central plot of the movie remains the same - a group of alluring youngsters concealing a violent murder, being terrorized a year later by a killer brandishing a metal hook and decked in fisherman's attire. In this version, the cast, while visually appealing, lacks personality - all save for the cameo appearances of Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt, who bring much-needed depth and connection to the original film.

Despite the efforts from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and co-writer Sam Lansky, who show their fondness for the original franchise, the film ultimately feels uninspired. It rehashes similar plot devices without adding creative novelty or genuine thrills, even in the final act laden with red herrings and plot twists.
While the sequel incorporates fun cameos and entertainingly vibrant side characters (including a creepy pastor and a quirky podcaster), they are criminally underutilized. As this new installment stumbles to reinvent itself, it is clear that the once-iconic franchise is showing its age. Regrettably, the reboot of "I Know What You Did Last Summer" fails to rekindle the chilling charm of the original and feels more like a cash grab attempt rather than a creative venture.
