This Is Spinal Tap: The Journey from Skit to National Treasure
- Jul 9, 2025
Though initially envisioned as a comedy skit mocking British rock bands, “This Is Spinal Tap” gradually evolved into a full-length film that gained the admiration of musicians and viewers worldwide. Despite facing rejection from every film studio, “All in the Family” creator Norman Lear financed the film which was released early in 1984. Though initially causing some confusion, the film gradually gained positive reviews and became a staple amongst touring bands after its release on home video.
The film was comprised of mostly improvised scenes performed by professional actors including, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, and Rob Reiner that depicted the disaster-filled U.S. tour of fictional British rock band, Spinal Tap. Even 41 years after its release, the film’s popularity has not waned. It has even been recognised in the National Film Registry, a quote from the film was included in the Oxford English Dictionary and the Writers Guild of America ranks it as being the 11th funniest screenplay of all time.

After years of rejecting ideas for a sequel, the creators have finally decided to proceed with “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues”. The impending release is expected in September and will feature previous cast members and guest appearances from numerous fans of the film, including musicians Paul McCartney, Elton John, Garth Brooks, Metallica's Lars Ulrich among others. The story line features Spinal Tap band performing together after 15 years due to a forced concert called in their manager's daughter's inherited contract.
