- Jul 1, 2022

The Top Gun sequel was one of the most anticipated movies of 2022, and on arrival, it did not disappoint. The movie stars Tom Cruise - who is enjoying a stellar career at the moment with the continued success of the Mission Impossible franchise. Top Gun Maverick has enjoyed massive success, earning rave reviews from critics and audiences, and smashing the box office with a strong US and International showing.

The Plot

The movie begins with Pete ‘Maverick’ working as a navy test pilot. He maintains his reckless streak 30 years after the vents of the first movie by destroying a prototype he was testing. As punishment, he is reassigned as a flight instructor for the current Top-Gun pilots who are training for a risky mission on a heavily guarded enemy nuclear site.

He ends up joining the mission which turns into an action-packed adventure. The film introduces a stellar new cast featuring two feuding pilots Jake ‘Hangman’ and Bradley ‘Rooster’ – who is the son of Maverick’s best friend ‘Goose’ who died in the first movie. Val Kilmer also returns as ‘Iceman’, now promoted to Admiral

Our Verdict

Top Gun ‘Maverick’ deserves all the acclaim it has been receiving. Many have praised it as being better than its iconic predecessor – and we agree. The visuals are stunning. The flight action sequences are well-shot and amazingly choreographed. It delivers edge-of-the-seat action.

The movie has been criticized for having a nameless adversary – the enemy state is never identified. But in the current tense global geopolitical state, this has helped the movie get international appeal without antagonizing any markets.

Tom Cruise delivers an excellent performance with his enthusiasm and the new actors enjoy a strong showing. On a scale of 0 – 10, we give it a strong 9.
