Inspired by the 1989 movie starring Tom Hanks, "The 'Burbs" is a gripping series on Peacock that blends horror and comedy to expose the underbelly of suburban life. The drama follows Samira (played by the gifted Keke Palmer) and Rob (Jack Whitehall), a city couple who transition to suburban life in Hinkley Hills with their baby son, Miles. They move into Rob's old familial home, and there, Samira's curiosity is provoked by a creepy, old Victorian house opposite their own.

Through her investigation, she unravels a twenty-year old secret that forces her to question everything about her new life – her community, and even her spouse. Adding elements of the sinister, the amusing, and the grotesque, "The 'Burbs" melds genres in a way that keeps the audience on edge until the very end.

The show begins with Samira and Rob stroll through Ashfield Place, discussing their whirlwind romance and impending parenthood. However, their calm is disrupted by a mob of cawing crows perched on a rickety, pink Victorian – the Hinkley House. The seemingly out of place house piques Samira's interest despite its off-putting appearance. She embarks on a mission to explore its history, aided by her new neighbours, plucky Lynn (Julia Duffy), ex-Marine, Dana (Paul Pell), and quirky Tod (Mark Proksch).

Across the eight-episode premier season, Samira, armed with her lawyerly prowess, delves deeper into the curious past of the Hinkley House and Rob's teenage years, dragging into light the mysterious arrival of the house's new owner, Gary (Justin Kirk). Backed by a fabulous cast and refreshingly honest storytelling, "The 'Burbs" offers an intriguing exploration of life in Hinkley Hills, showcasing the power dynamics among residents, enforced by its strict HOA President, Agnes (Danielle Kennedy).

What sets the series apart is its masterful depiction of racial tension and its psychological impact, reminiscent of the Oscar-winning "Get Out." The eccentricities of the inhabitants of Ashfield Place are intriguing, the series offers a candid perspective of Samira not just as a new mother but as a Black woman in a predominantly white society.

The series brilliantly portrays the daily microaggressions and overt racism faced by Samira, adding an extra layer of fear and apprehension. As the plot unravels, Rob's past comes to light, and the show offers a detailed exploration of the subtle complexities in seemingly perfect lives. Meet the quirky, engaging characters of Hinkley Hills in all eight episodes of “The ‘Burbs,” premiering on Peacock Feb. 8.
