Unveiling 'The Voice of Hind Rajab': A Disturbing Yet Captivating Film Experience
- Sep 4, 2025
In the movie, "The Voice of Hind Rajab", audiences are shocked, frustrated, and moved by the raw power of a terrified five-year old girl's pleas for help. Hind Rajab, the voice at the centre of this film, suffered a tragic fate during the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip on January 29, 2024. The nerve-tangling film is shaped around a real-life voice recording of Hind in her final hours. Contrasting her small, fearful voice with the frantic, adult voices of a call-center is a chilling approach taken by director Kaouther Ben Hania.
A brutal critique of the ongoing genocide, Ben Hania uses this 70-minute heart-wrenching audio recording to bring to life the real-time fate of one of over 18,000 children lost in the conflict. The Tunisian director boldly integrates the disturbing calls to the Palestine Red Crescent Society into a dramatization of the conflict. The film paints a tense scenario entirely within the confines of the Red Crescent's offices, using a ticking-clock atmosphere to demonstrate the frustrating helplessness of the frontline workers and the passing precious minutes of inaction.
Audiences feel a great emotional shock as Rajab’s desperate dialogue with the Red Crescent workers is presented almost in full. However, there is a debate over the effectiveness of the fictionalizing format, combining elements of melodrama with high-stakes, single-location thriller.

With cinematographer Juan Sarmiento G. capturing claustrophobic images of the call centre, the audience feels suffocated by the desperate cries coming in from Gaza residents, reflecting a genuine atmosphere of terror. The film hinges substantially on lead characters like impassioned volunteer Omar (Mataz Malhees) and the stoic supervisor Mahdi (Amer Hlehel), who struggle to deal with the increasing panic and pace of demands.
Hania’s distinct tearjerking approach and the compelling authenticity of her narrative have generated anticipation ahead of the film's Venice competition premiere. Despite the discomfort caused by the heart-tugging narrative, if "The Voice of Hind Rajab" brings global attention to the atrocities in Gaza, its goal is accomplished.
