Seeing Clearly: 20/20 Vision – Average, Not Perfect
- Apr 9, 2025
When you rock a score of 20/20 at the optometrist, you may leave the clinic strutting like a peacock. But before you start celebrating your "perfect" vision, let's make one thing crystal clear - 20/20 vision isn't perfect; it's average, mate!
Essentially, 20/20 (or 6/6 for our international friends) refers to your visual acuity, i.e., the sharpness of your sight when ogling an eye chart from 20 feet. It's nothing more than a fancy term for your ability to recognize patterns and details from a certain distance.
But don't pop the champagne corks just yet. While having 20/20 vision is definitely a freckle in your cap, it doesn't necessarily mean your ocular abilities are top-notch in all areas. It's a measure of distance vision, not a comprehensive evaluation of your whole eye prowess. Things like peripheral and color vision, ocular coordination, and ability to see near or at a certain light level are completely ignoring. So yes, you can have 20/20 sight but still feel like Stevie Wonder when trying to find your keys in the dark.
So how exactly is this eye business checked? Enter the joyous world of eye exams. These humdingers involve you squinting at chart full of letters form different distances. Ever wondered what those convoluted 20/number results mean? Well, if, for instance, you score a 20/40, it means you need to get half the distance closer than your 20/20 peers to read the same letter. In other words, your gambler friend could very likely wager on your need for glasses - and win.
It's worth noting though, don't expect miracles from those eye exercises that claim to magically improve your vision. According to research, the results from these are more marginal than an electoral vote in Florida.

But hey, don't get chained down by this dismal news. Even if you can't turned your squinted vision into hawk-like prowess all on your own, there's some stuff you can do to keep your peepers in decent shape.
Start with the basics: protect your eyes from harmful UV rays with sunglasses and stay on top of any underlying health conditions that could affect your sight (we're looking at you, diabetes). Quit smoking if you want your eyes to love you back. And please, for the love of all that is green, include leafy vegetables in your diet. You don’t want to go with our website name for real, right?
Most importantly, hustle on an eye appointment. Even if you're not in the league of glasses or contacts, get at least one eye exam by age 40. But if you're already a specs-wearing connoisseur or have diabetes, you'll need to slide into that optometrist chair more often. And if you've crossed the big 6-0, annual eye exams are your new best friends.
Remember, champions, 20/20 vision is just one measure of eye health. Even if you've got this bragging right, there's probably still room for improvement. So ditch the smugness and slap on a pair of sunnies, consider corrective measures if needed, and treat your eyes to a balanced diet. After all, they are your windows to the world, aren't they?
