Behind The Scenes of "Blue Valentine": Michelle Williams Speaks on Unique Production Process
- May 24, 2025
Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Williams recently shared insights into her experience filming the 2010 romantic drama "Blue Valentine." Directed by Derek Cianfrance, the movie featured Williams and co-star Ryan Gosling portraying a couple who attempted to navigate their faltering relationship.
Speaking on the Armchair Expert podcast, Williams revealed that, to better understand their characters who were once enamored with each other but had since grown distant, they were encouraged by the director to take a two-week hiatus from filming. During this break, Williams and Gosling lived together during office hours, from 9 to 5, to delve deeper into their characters and their strained relationship. They took part in improvisational exercises aimed at pinpointing ways to frustrate each other, imbuing their characters' dynamics with realism.
Williams confessed that the break was originally unintended but was enabled by their attachment to their roles. Despite the distressing nature of digging into their characters' fading love, the cast and crew strove to make the experience as genuine as possible, even symbolically burning a mock wedding photo to further "destroy" the romance their characters once had.

Despite the valuable experiences drawn from the atypical filming method, Williams questioned its applicability to modern productions. Given the associated costs and potential downtime, it could be challenging to justify to a film crew or producer.
"Blue Valentine," despite being a low-budget production, garnered Williams her second Oscar nomination and was the only nomination the film received at the Academy Awards in 2011.
