Imax China has confirmed it will dedicate most, if not all, of its nearly 800-screen network to Christopher Nolan's latest blockbuster, "The Odyssey," when it premieres in mainland China on August 14. CEO Daniel Manwaring has suggested that the audience demand for the film's release will be significant, surpassing previous films across the same network.

Nolan, the film's director, and its star Matt Damon will attend a red carpet event in Beijing's China National Film Museum on July 30, marking a first for a commercial film. This event is in addition to planned screenings in Beijing and at an Imax theater within Universal Beijing Resort, indicating strong audience and industry anticipation for "The Odyssey".

Opening previews are scheduled for August 1 and 2 in key cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. This coincides with Imax China's notable pre-sales surge for "Spider-Man: Brand New Day." However, Manwaring has highlighted the difference in the audiences for the two films, indicating "The Odyssey" has a stronger appeal to a first-tier city crowd.

Early interest in "The Odyssey", reflected in pre-release registrations, has already surpassed all other forthcoming imported films tracked by ticketing platform, Maoyan Pro. This surge in interest is visible across the platform’s urban users and regular moviegoers and indicates the enormous audience potential for the film once it hits the screens.

Christopher Nolan's \

Nolan's growing popularity in China is a significant factor for the optimistic projection of the film's success. His previous film, "Oppenheimer," generated considerable revenue in China, enhancing what the industry refers to as the "Christopher Nolan effect". This phenomenon entails Nolan's gradually increasing influence and popularity, leading to an increase in box office returns for films under his directorship.

Serving the zeal of technical cinema lovers, Imax China is paying attention to enhancing their viewing experience, with discussions underway to bring the 70mm Imax format to the region. Meanwhile, the company is also focusing on content differentiation over mere specifications, including sports events, concerts, and documentaries alongside films.

Imax China is also considering strategic expansion in higher-tier cities over the previously targeted mall-driven, lower-tier cities. Alternative content sources and program initiatives are also being leveraged to expand the network's target audience, effectively drawing viewers back to cinema experiences.
