Jean Smart Joins "The Families Stone" Sequel Cast

Emmy-Award winning actress Jean Smart has been added to the robust ensemble of the upcoming "The Families Stone" film, a sequel to the beloved previously announced cast members include noteworthy actors such as Rachel McAdams, Sarah Jessica Parker, Claire Danes, Dermot Mulroney, and others.

Searchlight Pictures' synopsis for "The Families Stone" reveals a heartwarming and unexpected story. Twenty years after the loss of their mother, the Stone family comes together for Christmas. The celebrations take an unexpected turn when their father invites his new romantic interest (played by Smart) to meet the family. Filming for the much-awaited sequel is scheduled to commence in New York during the fall.

Jean Smart, an acclaimed actress, is renowned for her standout lead role in HBO’s “Hacks.” Awarded an Emmy for her performance as Deborah Vance in the comedy series' finale season, Smart made history as the first female performer to bag an Emmy each season of a show. Smart will also be seen in the forthcoming romantic comedy “Egg Baby", directed by Natalia Anderson.

The original movie, “The Family Stone” (2005), showcased Parker as a conventional businesswoman Meredith Morton, who visits her boyfriend's unconventional family during their Christmas celebrations. The sequel to this film was announced by writer-director Tom Bezucha in 2025, following the demise of Diane Keaton, who played the family matriarch in the original movie.
