Dave Bautista In Talks for Kratos Role in Amazon's “God of War”

Variety reports that Dave Bautista is currently in discussion to take up the role of Kratos in the Amazon Prime Video existential series "God of War," based on the renowned video game franchise. This update comes after Ryan Hurst, who was initially cast as the eponymous god in January 2026, incurred a bicep injury on the set, causing production to be on hold until 2027. Thus, Amazon and Sony elected to recast the role, with plans to resume production by fall.

Given his physicality and accomplished acting career, Bautista is a suitable candidate to step into Kratos's role on short notice. Known for his muscular portrayal in the games, Kratos's character calls for Bautista's impressive physical state throughout his career. Bautista has an established liaison with Amazon MGM Studios, starring in Amazon movies like "The Wrecking Crew," "My Spy," and "My Spy: The Eternal City," and is slated to feature in “Road House 2” and a re-creation of “Highlander” for Amazon.

Bautista first gained fame in WWE before transitioning to a successful acting career. He has portrayed Drax in six Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, featured in the first two “Dune” films by Denis Villeneuve, lent his voice to the animated film “Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender,” and starred in movies like “Blade Runner 2049,” “Knock at the Cabin,” “Spectre,” and “Army of the Dead.”

He is represented by WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman. Prime Video has commissioned a two-season order for "God of War." As per earlier reports, the series will continue the narrative of the latest two "God of War" games, where Kratos raises his ten-year-old son Atreus amidst battles against Norse pantheon gods.

Callum Vinson will play Kratos' son Atreus. Other cast proceedings feature Max Parker, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Mandy Patinkin, Alastair Duncan, Danny Woodburn, Jeff Gulka, and Ed Skrein. Ronald D. Moore is the writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the series. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes. Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in collaboration with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions, coproduce the series.
