A major source of anxiety might be a family movie night. It can be difficult to find a movie that will please the entire family. The Lion King, first (1994)

Parents should resist pressure from older children to watch the "live-action" remake starring Beyoncé. Instead, they should introduce them to the timeless joys of this Disney-animated masterpiece from the Renaissance era.

Simba is the youthful heir to the Pride Lands kingdom until his evil uncle, Scar, violently overthrows his own sibling and usurps power. Will Simba muster the resolve to face his foe and claim the crown that is rightfully his? No offense to Shakespeare, but this is a better rendition of Hamlet.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)

The first installment of the acclaimed Harry Potter series is a great way to start a night of witchcraft and wizardry. A young kid who discovers his true identity and magical abilities finds himself on Platform 9 3/4 heading to Hogwarts, a boarding school unlike any other as soon as he learns about them. Our little wizard is about to embark on an adventure when all of a sudden, the universe and his life are turned upside down. PG rated.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Boy meets alien is essentially all there is to the tale. Aliens and boys become close buddies. Boy bids alien goodbye when his space pal must return home, prompting uncontrollable sobbing among viewers around. Of course, how Steven Spielberg tells it makes all the difference, as he imbues this family film with a sense of innocent awe. We'll personally buy you a bag of Reese's Pieces if you can name a more magical 1980s film scene than E.T. and Elliott bicycling past the moon. PG rated.

Star Wars (1977)

What sequence should I view the Star Wars films in? A good query! Starting with the original (and best) is the finest course of action, in our opinion. Kids will be as spellbound as if they've been caught in a Death Star tractor beam from the opening picture, in which that whooping huge Star Destroyer whooshes across the screen apparently indefinitely. Two hours of matinee-style magic including timeless heroes, spooky antagonists, cute droids, and all the mysteries of the Jedi share the screen, entertaining even the most restless youngster. Watching the Star Wars movies has become a more complex family rite of passage with every new addition to the canon and spin-off, but even if you’re just in the mood for one trip to a galaxy far, far away, Star Wars will never let you down. Rated PG.

Queen of Katwe (2016)

Chess, one of the least entertaining competitions out there, is turned into the focal point of Mira Nair's Queen of Katwe, which is similar to the largely wonderful Akeelah and the Bee (without the disturbing racial prejudices). It's a sports movie that substitutes bishops for footballs and is based on the true story of a Ugandan youngster who went from the slums to the World Chess Olympiads. David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong'o both give strong performances. PG rated.

The Goonies (1985)

Both the Steven Spielberg-produced and Richard Donner-directed classic Goonies never say die (well, almost never). Young tweens are followed as they set out on an adventure to prevent the foreclosure of their home in the 1980s comedy. The group's leader, the overly exuberant Mikey, persuades his companions that looking for One-Eyed Willy's wealth is a fantastic way to maintain their roots, but their search for the gems is highly risky-especially if the Fratelli crime family learns about it! PG rated.
