Agathe, the enchanting main character in Laura Piani’s delightful romantic comedy "Jane Austen Wrecked My Life", harbours a passion for writing. Working as a bookseller in Paris, she delves into the world of literature daily, taking in the genius of renowned authors. However, like many burgeoning writers, she writes in secret and avoids sharing her work. When her closest friend and fellow bookseller, Felix, uncovers one of her pieces, he submits it to a highly acclaimed writing residency in Jane Austen's honour without Agathe's knowledge. Her acceptance into the program sets her life on a journey she never expected.

The film, brimming with charm, is Piani’s tribute to the 19th-century literary icon and a heartfelt dedication to the craft of writing. While it remains faithful to the conventions of a romantic comedy, it does weave unique elements into the narrative. Agathe, our slightly awkward leading lady reminiscent of Bridget Jones, discovers herself as much through her artistic journey as her romantic misadventures.

The film draws inspiration from Austen's "Pride and Prejudice". Just like Elizabeth Bennet, Agathe tackles love with an energising zeal, basking in the unpredictability and thrill of it. She quickly forms opinions, and these initial impressions often hold her back. On her arrival to the residency, she meets Oliver, a descendant of Jane Austen and an operative at the retreat, who mirrors Mr. Darcy. An off-putting initial interaction sets the pace for the love-story, disrupting Agathe's initial view of Oliver.

"Jane Austen Wrecked My Life" carries the audience from Paris to a quaint coastal English town where the writing retreat takes place. Piani vividly captures the buzzing culture of a writing residency - engaging, intellectual debates and writers lost in their thoughts in serene, open fields. However, Agathe battles with writer's block, starkly contrasting with her surroundings and peers.

Piani exhibits laudable confidence when the film narrows down its focus on Agathe's romantic interests. Rutherford, known for her role in "Anatomy of a Fall", presents Agathe wonderfully, highlighting her fluctuating experiences with love ranging from cringeworthy encounters to blush-worthy sweet ones. Intriguingly, Piani doesn't reveal who Agathe ends up with too quickly, thereby keeping the audience hooked to the end.

While juggling the pressure of fulfilling her draft deadline and managing romantic interests, Agathe grapples with her own sense of self-doubt and seeks to understand her priorities. "Jane Austen Wrecked My Life" explores these integral themes within the aesthetic residence setting layered with detailed close-ups of the decor and manicured gardens to emphasise the beauty of escape.

Collaborating with cinematographer Pierre Mazoyer, Piani develops the aesthetics of the early-2000s romantic comedy genre, featuring close-ups and an evocative score by Peter Von Poehl. However, the real allure lies in Agathe, an intriguing protagonist whose love for literature and romance keeps the viewers thoroughly engaged.
