In Netflix’s "Bad Thoughts", Tom Segura brings his unique humour to the fore. He willingly dives deep into edgy comedy, blasting through boundaries of propriety and navigating the absurd, all to elicit a range of reactions from his audience.

Drawing parallels with the "Twilight Zone" and described as a comedic counterpart to "Black Mirror", "Bad Thoughts" can perhaps be more accurately likened to a sketch show. Each episode is divided into two or three parts, with the last segment typically leading to the opening of the next episode, efficiently coaxing viewers to utilize Netflix's autoplay feature. The series clocks in at a digestible 114 minutes, including credits.

Despite its dark undertones and occasional inappropriate, gross or explicit content, the show remains a collection of relatable comic skits rather than a genuine walk on the dark side. The series showcases a variety of vignettes that manifests in a myriad of genres from horror to foreign film spoofs and beyond.

Inside \

Running through the satirical narratives is an implicit but prevalent theme centered around the limitations of what one can say in contemporary sociocultural contexts, often probing the boundaries between publicity acceptability and personal thought. This is conveyed through clever plot devices such as getting a child to use racist language or by deploying Segura in multiple roles.

Sexual humiliation forms another consistent thread, illustrating what seems to be Segura's fascination with social submissiveness and awkward sexual encounters. The punchlines primarily revolve around offense and uncomfortable sexual encounters; though not entirely innovative, the humor manages to hit its mark thanks to Segura's tendency to double down on these themes.

My absolute favorite piece is "Rex Henley". It's a narrative that departs from Segura’s standard rib-tickling humor and portrays a country singer achieving fame and subsequently going to ridiculous extremes to reclaim his authenticity. This skit showcases the show's attraction – it makes you feel like you’re having an intimate glimpse into someone’s personal inklings, and quirky psyche, beyond the commonplace id-driven realms. In Segura’s world of "Bad Thoughts", it’s all about peering into the astonishing depths of personal yet strangely universal human absurdities.
