Onslaught: A High-Octane Genre Blend in Military-Horror Thriller

In “Onslaught”, director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett flex their skills in genre blending, creating a film that mixes military drama and slasher thriller with intense results. Wrapped around a 12-hour countdown to a predicted massacre, the film may not be their most refined creation but shines in its ambitious aesthetic and storyline. A major highlight of the summer film season, it ushers in the thrill-centric autumnal viewing period.

The central narrative is set in a trailer park inhabited by U.S. army veterans, managed by a paranoid, firearm-trained former sniper, Celeste, played by Adria Arjona. The sudden arrival of her ex-husband and their young daughter Daisy, introduces a family drama that runs parallel to ominous happenings at a nearby covert military base.

The subplot introduces audiences to Dr. Hans Kammler, portrayed by Dan Stevens, a heavily fictionalized German scientist, along with his domineering wife Hanna, played by Rebecca Hall. Together, they conduct torturous experiments on a trio of sociopathic super-soldiers. The film cleverly ties in historical events like Operation Paperclip into its narrative.

The interweaving of these separate storylines results in a one-of-a-kind genre blend.
