Marvel's Stumbling Block: The Failed "Blade" Reboot
- Oct 1, 2026
Two-time Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali has voiced his agreement with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige's lament about the troubled reboot of the "Blade" movie. In a candid interview with GQ, the actor mirrored Feige's sentiment about the numerous mishaps that have inhibited the progression of the film.
Introduced to the Marvel movie line-up in July 2019, "Blade" found its first director in Bassam Tariq who, despite leaving two months before the filming was set to begin, now directs Ali in "Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother." His departure incited a series of director changes until June 2024, when current director Yann Demange also stepped down. Moreover, it was reported in November 2023 that "Blade" had seen at least five writers, from Stacy Osei-Kuffour of "Watchmen" to Michael Starrbury.
However, despite the inconstant development of the film, Ali's eagerness to play Blade remained solid. In an interview with GQ, Ali asserted that Marvel Studios, which is backed by billions of dollars, could have initiated the movie production if they wished to.

Feige, in a July 2025 press conference, addressed the stalled "Blade" project and attributed it to Marvel's over-expansion into Disney+ content which, for the first time, saw quantity outranking quality. Consequently, "Blade" was among the projects that halted when Marvel reassessed its development process.
Despite being a two-time Oscar winner, Ali's career progression remains uncertain. He expressed to GQ the struggle to be cast, pointing to his fight to land a role in HBO's "True Detective" Season 3. However, the actor insists on no bitterness or disappointment, instead, he sees the industry's demands as a reason to continually build on his career. He concluded by questioning the longevity of his career path in the industry. Read more in Ali's full interview with GQ below.
