"Mataviejitas: The Serial Killer" - HBO Max's New Thriller from Latin America

HBO Max is diversifying its Latin American content with the production of the original series "Mataviejitas: The Serial Killer." Currently in production by Exile Content in Mexico City, the series has Humberto Hinojosa, known for “The Head of Joaquín Murrieta,” and “Luis Miguel: The Series,” serving as the showrunner, in addition to sharing the director's chair with J.M. Cravioto of “El Chapo” fame.

The series is modelled after a notorious crime case in Mexico, chronicling the hunt for a serial killer who preyed primarily on elderly women. As Mariano César, head of Warner Bros. Discovery Latin America & U.S. Hispanic, notes, the series successfully marries intense suspense of a crime thriller with an authentic Mexican flair.

Hinojosa states that he was drawn to the project as it presented an opportunity to craft a series rich in thrilling elements while exploring dark themes - a rarity in Spanish-language television, particularly in Mexico. He further stated his admiration for the series' commitment to exploring these darker themes while still portraying a ray of hope amidst the gloom.

Cravioto relayed his excitement at being a part of the project, expressing his belief that the series will not only resonate with Mexican audiences but a global audience, thanks to its rich blend of Mexican cultural elements and international thriller tropes.

“Mataviejitas: The Serial Killer" is one of many HBO Originals from Latin America set to launch worldwide. The series joins the likes of Emmy-nominated shows such as “The Pitt” and “Hacks” in HBO's lineup, representing HBO Max's continued investment in local content to foster viewer growth and engagement.

In addition to "Mataviejitas: The Serial Killer," HBO Max has several forthcoming shows from Latin America including "The Flores Massacre," a docuseries revisiting an infamous case in Argentina, and "Carnival Poet," following a grotesque crime committed by José Luis Calva Zepeda, known as the Cannibal Poet. Other shows include “Carlota,” “Collision,” “Don Ramon,” “Tragedy in the Corregidora,” “City of God: The Fight Rages On” Season 2, “Death and Mystery in the Amazon,” and “Vespera.” These shows further demonstrate HBO Max's commitment to amplifying Latin content.
