Netflix Unleashes Animated Body-Switching Adventure 'Swapped'

In Netflix's latest animated offering, 'Swapped', the time-honoured trope of bodyswapping takes a new twist as it is applied to animals. Although a similar concept was recently explored in 'Hoppers', 'Swapped' brings its unique charm with beautifully crafted animation and vocal performances, including Michael B. Jordan's first screen appearance since his Oscar win for 'Sinners'.

Directed by Nathan Greno, known for his previous work in 2010's 'Tangled', the film's setting is the picturesque "Valley", home to various fantastical creatures. The story focuses on 'Pookoos', tiny sea otter-like creatures, and 'Javans', large birds bearing resemblance to owls and parrots.

Michael B. Jordan voices the character of Ollie, an adventurous young Pookoo with an insatiable curiosity about his surroundings. Cedric the Entertainer and Justina Machado portray Ollie's exasperated parents, who constantly remind him of their survival motto: “Hide today, alive tomorrow!” Ollie also has a grandmother, voiced by Tata Vega, who shares a cautionary tale about a "Fire Wolf".

Ollie soon encounters a trio of Javan sisters, one of whom, Ivy, voiced by Juno Temple, holds a past connection with him. A twist of fate, involving a “glowing pod”, causes Ivy and Ollie to swap bodies, compelling them to put their differences aside and fight for their survival, forging an unlikely friendship with Boogle, a charming fish voiced by Tracy Morgan.

'Swapped' takes the audience on a fun-filled journey that subtly promotes a message of unity among different species. The film also allows viewers to savour beautifully rendered verdant landscapes and uniquely designed characters. The movie cleverly combines humour with unexpected plot twists. Still, it is Tracy Morgan’s enthusiastic portrayal of Boogle that stands out, leaving audiences wanting more animated works featuring his vocal talents.
