Edgar Wright's "The Running Man" graces the big screen this week as a survival-based, class commentary action thriller. In contrast, Netflix's "Last Samurai Standing," inspired by the end of the samurai era, provides a compelling narrative mixed with action and social commentary through Shogo Imamura's manga series Ikusagami on the small screen. The live-action manga series reflects Netflix's growing trend following the likes of “One Piece,” “Yu Yu Hakusho,” and “Parasyte: The Grey.” This series is a new pinnacle in its genre, marking its place as a quality action TV drama of the year.

The first season, consisting of six episodes, dives into the world of Shujiro Saga (portrayed by Junichi Okada), a former high-ranking assassin who is now branded as obsolete in the rapidly changing Meiji world. Shujiro battles past traumas and the challenges faced by his family struck by cholera. He then receives an unexpected invitation to a deadly tournament held in Kyoto's Tenryū-ji temple, offering a grand prize of 100 billion yen.

The brutal game, "Kodoku," requires contestants to eliminate their competitors and collect their 'tags.' The game quickly descends into chaos, forcing Shujiro to protect the young Futaba Katsuki, joining him as his comrade. Throughout their journey, they form alliances to survive the perils and deadly warriors of the game.

The bold and captivating Netflix series, “Last Samurai Standing,” presents an unmatched display of vibrant action sequences and intense character moments. The series directors Michihito Fujii and Kento Yamaguchi, alongside Toru Yamamoto, leverage the backdrop of the Tōkaidō journey to provide a staggering series of choreographed fight scenes, maintaining a balance between fantastical and human elements throughout.

The poignant narrative and character development serve as the series' emotional core, particularly through the relationship between Shujiro and Futaba. However, the high number of characters introduced in the short season often feels overwhelming, with many characters being written off moments after their introduction.

Despite veering into somewhat cartoonish territory, the engaging action sequences, realistic character designs, and skillful performances blend to form the triumphant “Last Samurai Standing,” one of the most thrillingly orchestrated action series on television in recent years.

The series is available for viewing now on Netflix.
