When we first meet Sam Elliott in Season 2 of “Landman,” he clings to the fading light of the sunset, acting as T.L., the estranged father of the main character Tommy, played by Billy Bob Thornton. Seated in the backyard of a disheveled assisted living facility, T.L. finds solace in the setting sun, his only form of solace as his wife, Dorothy, resides at a separate memory care facility.

The bittersweet connection between Tommy and T.L. revolves around memories, particularly the haunting recollection of a mother who spiraled into alcoholism after losing a child. While T.L. dealt with the tragedy by distancing himself to work in the fields, young Tommy was left to face the dark reality of an abusive mother.

When Dorothy's death news reaches, Tommy’s ex-wife Angela (Ali Larter) persuades that T.L. should move in with Tommy’s reconciled family. This forces both the father and son onto a path of emotional exploration, masterfully crafted by writer and co-creator Taylor Sheridan.

Sam Elliott, a beloved 81-year-old actor who entertained generations with his impeccable performances in films like “Lifeguard,” “Gettysburg,” “Tombstone,” “The Big Lebowski,” and “A Star Is Born”, delivers a heart-touching performance as an aging man coming to terms with his mortality. Depicting a man grappling with old age and its accompanying issues, Elliott's performance is outstanding, offering the audience a raw, authentic portrait of an ailing man coming to grips with his past errors.

As the season progresses, T.L., while battling his physical ailments, draws warmth and animated energy from Angela and his granddaughter Ainsley (Michelle Randolph). Through T.L.’s emotional journey, Tommy too, gradually learns to address and appreciate his life's blessings.

"Landman", in its true essence, isn’t afraid to depict seniors' romantic cravings, leading to T.L.’s unexpected yet blossoming friendship with an exotic dancer named Cheyenne (Francesca Xuereb), who doubles as his physical therapist.

This season, while receiving criticism for its focus shift from oil industry games to family drama, emphasizes the underlying message of cherishing one’s own time. In the end, it is T.L. who guides Tommy to discover life’s simple joys, beautifully illustrated by Sam Elliott's memorable performance. Such a complex character could only be brought to life by someone of Elliott's acting caliber, combining pathos and humor in the perfect amount and leading us through this unforgettable cowboy’s last ride.
