Scarlett Johansson to Lead Ari Aster's Next Film "Scapegoat"
- May 8, 2026
Scarlett Johansson, known for her roles in big-studio films like the "Jurassic World" series, will now star in "Scapegoat", the upcoming title from acclaimed indie director Ari Aster. Notorious for keeping plot details under wraps, Aster reunites with distributor A24, a relationship previously established with hits like "Hereditary" and "Eddington". Renowned producer Lars Knudsen will produce this project under his Square Peg label.
Johansson, who recently completed work on a fresh take on “The Exorcist” at Universal under director Mike Flanagan, will also appear alongside Adam Driver in a forthcoming drama "Paper Tiger", set for premiere at Cannes Film Festival. Additionally, she is involved in "Ray Gunn", an animated sci-fi noir created by Brad Bird and Skydance Animation.
Aster's previous film "Eddington", featuring a star-studded ensemble of Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, and Pedro Pascal, made headlines as a searing critique of misinformation and America's political discord amid the early days of COVID. Despite mixed reviews, Aster continues to be a lauded figure in indie cinema, with more titles such as "Midsommar", "Beau Is Afraid", the award-contender "Bugonia", and box office success "The Drama" in his portfolio.
