Sony Pictures Acquires North American Rights to ‘The Surgeon’

Sony Pictures has won the North American rights to the Toronto breakaway hit, "The Surgeon," in what the studio labeled as a "fierce bid war." Besides North America, Sony also obtained rights for the movie in Latin America, Italy, China, and Hong Kong. The film is a new thrilling project from Roshan Sethi, known for "A Nice Indian Boy" and "The Resident," who also serves as a qualified radiation oncologist.

Featured in the thriller are esteemed actors Michelle Yeoh, Martin Freeman, Laurie Davidson, Yuri Kolokolnikov, and Joseph Mydell, coming from the cinematic teams Thunder Road and Tango.

The movie, "The Surgeon," is a collaborative production effort that involved Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Diarmaid McGrath from Thunder Road, Tim Headington, Lia Buman, Neil Shah from Tango, Steve Klinsky, Adam Kolbrenner from Lit Entertainment Group, and several others. Executive producers of the film comprise notable figures including Theresa Page, Kim Szarzynski, Michelle Yeoh, and others.

In the movie, Yeoh plays a proficient surgeon who unexpectedly gets kidnapped and compelled to administer surgery on an enigmatic patient. However, she uses her vast surgical experience to overthrow her captors, outsmarting them in a life or death scenario. The film's soundtrack incorporates tracks from Thin Lizzy, a personal favorite of the protagonist in the operating room.

The acquisition deal was brokered by WME representing the filmmakers. International sales rights were controlled by 193, a Legendary company. The agreement was negotiated on behalf of the studio by executives from Sony Pictures. Roshan Sethi is represented by CAA and the Lit Entertainment Group.
