- Dec 23, 2025
Dwayne Johnson subscribers will have another opportunity to see his profound character shift in "The Smashing Machine", directed by Benny Safdie, as it premieres once more on HBO Max on January 23. The movie, which follows the life of two-time UFC heavyweight winner Mark Kerr, features not only Johnson but also prominent actors including Emily Blunt, Bas Rutten, Lyndsey Gavin, and Oleksandr Usyk.
Mark Kerr is a former mixed martial artist who had a successful career from 1997 through 2009, clinching four ADCC World Championships titles. Benny Safdie, known for his work on films such as "Uncut Gems" and "Good Time" with his brother Josh, marked his first individual directorial effort with "The Smashing Machine".

This is the second time Johnson and Blunt have teamed up, having previously worked together on Disney's "Jungle Cruise" in 2021. They are also slated to partner with Leonardo DiCaprio on an upcoming crime thriller set in Hawaii from esteemed director Martin Scorsese.
Despite the film's modest domestic box office opening, earning just $5.9 million, Johnson remains upbeat about the project and his collaboration with Safdie. In an Instagram post following the film's opening weekend, he expressed his appreciation for those who have seen "The Smashing Machine", emphasizing that a performer can only control their performance and dedication. He expressed gratitude for the experience, describing it as life-changing and thanking Safdie for the faith placed in him.
