The Brannocks are seriously shaken after receiving the second letter, as seen in The Watcher episode 2. They visit Chamberland once more and beg him to look into Jasper. He dismisses their fears and instead requests that they put their home up for sale to see if anyone would make a bid. He also proposes employing private security.

But the price is prohibitive. The next piece of advice is to hire a reputable private investigator, which they believe is a smart move. The following day, Dean encounters jazz musician turned private investigator Theodora Birch. She talks about how she developed a murder obsession while in rehab despite having liver cancer. She was actually saved from her drinking by that.

Dean opposes selling the house, despite Nora's claims to the contrary. The kitchen and basement renovations are about to begin, and the dust could cause Carter's asthma to flare up once more. That being the case, Nora advises that they temporarily check into a motel. Dean supports her.

The family books a room at a nearby motel, and Dean returns home to rest before letting the workmen in the following day. The doorbell rings as Dean is about to fall asleep. No one is there when he steps outside, but we can make out someone lurking in the shadows and keeping an eye on him. The same music that Ellie heard in the last episode may be heard coming from upstairs.

A call comes in the middle of the night to Nora. The person on the other end of the line does nothing except breath. She gives Dean this information over the phone, and when they ask the front desk to dial the number again, we hear it ring out of the Brannock house. In fact, the Watcher is there in their home.
