Pressure on men to adhere to perceived societal ideals of appearance are largely unspoken. However, 'Materialists' by Celine Song and 'Manhood' by Daniel Lombroso shed light on the hidden narratives. In 'Manhood', Lombroso focuses on the subtle but prevalent issue in male society, size obsession. He cleverly interlocks seriousness, humor, and empathy in portraying the diverse stories of three distinct individuals.

Bill Moore, an entrepreneur in Dallas, pioneered the market for penile enhancement, striving to normalize it in the same way as Botox. Moore works in the understanding that men bear hidden shame about their physical appearance. He aims to tackle this shame with solutions that are both practical and considerate.

Two of Moore's clients, David Smith and Ruben Ramirez, are forefront of the narrative. David, a gay nursing student, feels constraining societal pressure due to his line of work and sought a permanent size enhancement solution. However, the procedure was botched, leaving him with physical deformities. In Moore, David finds hope, as well as a possible romance. Ruben, on the other hand, a financially struggling comedian and father, gets trapped in the compulsion of enlarging his size despite monetary restraints.

The documentary serves as a reality check for men who might feel queasy about the physical disruption the process entails. It underscores the vicious circle of society's unrealistic criterion of masculinity, and how it fuels fear and embarrassment among men.

Similar to the overnight sensation of Viagra, Moore's filler injections may walk the same path. Amid embarrassing situations and societal mockery, the film reminds us of the silent human fears hidden amidst our society.

In the finale, Lombroso skillfully ensures each character finds closure both on a personal and professional level. David's story in particular wraps up on a touching note, bringing attention to the pressing need to address an individual's deep-rooted anxieties.
