A Deeper Look Into "Rosario": More Than A Dark Magic Movie

Now playing in theaters, the movie "Rosario," produced by Mucho Mas Releasing, is not your average dark magic film. It does encompass elements of horror including ghostly occurrences and jarring body horror, but the main narrative written by Alan Trezza covers more profound themes.

Emeraude Toubia plays Rosario, a character who steps into a realm of horror as she is dealing with her grandmother's death amid a tremendous storm. She has to navigate her grandmother's eerie apartment, an intrusive neighbor, and the unsettling revelation that her grandmother was deeply involved in dark magic.

Trezza has subtly incorporated aspects of immigration and assimilation into the storyline, an inspiration drawn from his and his wife's immigrant backgrounds. He attempts to delve into the sacrifices and shifts in identity that individuals often have to make in order to achieve the elusive American dream.

In shaping his story, Trezza chose to focus on Palo Mayombe, a religion not commonly discussed in mainstream media, instead of more well-known practices like Santería and Voodoo. He explains how the religion has often been exploited by Mexican drug cartels for nefarious ends, including human sacrifices for power, wealth, and protection.

As Rosario unveils her family's past and uncovers the underpinnings of their magic, she also faces horror elements typical of a haunted house movie. However, as she learns, these are not just fanciful scares but echoes of the real-life horrors her family experienced crossing the border. Trezza believes in creating fear and suspense that tie back to the central theme, making them more impactful.

The Mexican-American writer has also disclosed his work on another script focusing on magical healing, further exploring aspects of black and white magic.

Trezza takes pride in writing material that not only resonates with audiences familiar with the culture but also gives insight to those unfamiliar with it, stating, "The Mexican culture, Latino culture, it’s filled with incredible stories, incredible themes and incredible people."
