A Family Affair on Screen: Reviewing "She Dances"
- Jun 17, 2025
Debuting as a director, actor Rick Gomez, co-wrote a touching dramedy, "She Dances", with actor Steve Zahn. This film is a highly personal venture, featuring the introduces of Audrey Zahn, Steve's daughter. “She Dances” centres on the narrative of a father-daughter relationship navigating through domestic turmoil during a road trip, using the journey as a healing process. Yet, the delivery falls short in some areas, with underdeveloped emotions and humor that often misses its mark. However, despite its imperfect writing and direction, the charm and enthusiasm of the Zahns manages to save the day.
The plot follows teenager Claire (played by Audrey Zahn) and her distant father, Jason (played by Steve Zahn), as they embark on a road trip to take Claire and her best friend, Kat, to an out-of-state dance competition. As Jason juggles a family emergency and the prospects of selling his distillery, the road trip becomes a way to reconnect with his estranged daughter. The trip throws up various complications and uncovers layers of unresolved grief within the family.

The film's strength lies in the genuine familial intimacy captured occasionally. The on-screen collaboration between the Zahns means much to them and watching it unfold bears a resemblance to a father-daughter dance. However, the film could have been more engaging without its stretched length and sometimes contrived dialogue and set design. The younger Zahn, a talented dancer, delivers some beautiful choreographed sequences. The movie also introduces a competitive storyline between Claire and a strictly disciplined dancer, enhancing the film's theme of communal ties.
Despite its flaws, the unique value of “She Dances” can be found in its opening credits, introducing a promising talent - Audrey Zahn. It signifies a beautiful beginning, marking Audrey's first steps towards an inevitable future in cinema.
