"A Little Prayer" Finds New North American Distributor
- May 12, 2025
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the appointment of a new Pope, there's some good news in the indie film sector. The highly praised drama "A Little Prayer," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023, has secured a North American distributor despite the breakdown of its initial agreement.
The movie, written and directed by "Junebug" creator Angus MacLachlan, drew praise at Sundance for its focused, realistic storytelling and moving performances from lead actors David Strathairn and Jane Levy. Music Box Films has now stepped in to handle the film's theatrical release, slated for later in 2025.
"A Little Prayer" was originally picked up by Sony Pictures Classics two years ago – a company that previously released "Junebug," contributing to Amy Adams' rise to fame and her Oscar nomination. However, dual Hollywood labor strikes instigated by the Writers Guild of America in late 2023 disrupted the film industry, halting many releases and leading to strikes by numerous actors. Due to these disruptions, finalizing the acquisition of "A Little Prayer" by SPC became impossible, leaving the film's rights back with MacLachlan and the producers, and opening a window for Music Box to step in.

In their statement, the new distributors expressed their excitement to finally bring "A Little Prayer" to US audiences. They commended the film's subtle storytelling, moving performances, and the unexpected power it holds to move and captivate viewers. The movie also includes performances from Will Pullen, Anna Camp, Dascha Polanco, and renowned character actor Celia Weston.
The plot of "A Little Prayer" revolves around a disjointed family living in the American south. It features a small business owner Bill (Strathairn) suspecting that his son (Pullen) is unfaithful to his wife (Levy). As he tries to investigate and preserve his family, his failings as a parent and husband become increasingly apparent. Levy's character is simultaneously trying to reconcile her future and her self-worth.
The film's negotiated sale was concluded by Brian Andreotti of Music Box Films and producer Lauren Vilchik acting for the filmmakers, and will close the Chicago Critics Film Festival tonight with MacLachlan and Levy participating in a discussion.
