Exploring the intricacies of adolescence and the devastating pervasiveness of abuse, Czech director Ondrej Provaznik presents his latest feature film, Broken Voices (Sbormistr). Inspired by the harrowing real-life tale of the renowned Czech youth chorus, the Bambini di Praga (Children of Prague), and the sexual misconduct scandal that shook it in 2008, the film sets out a familiar narrative journey but imbues it with heart and truth.

Set during the early 1990s in the Czech Republic, the story unfolds as the country is slowly getting rid of the last remnants of Communism. The narrative explores the desperation of the youth born under Soviet rule to experience the world beyond their birthplace. Sisters Karolina and Lucie see their chance to venture out when they are selected as premium singers in a renowned choir set to tour three major U.S. cities. However, their journey to fame and freedom is tarnished by the dark reality of their chorus being directed by Macha, a man who displays clear signs of being a sexual predator.

As the story progresses, Karolina becomes the central character and the viewer experiences the narrative from her perspective. She faces numerous challenges, including being ostracized by her peer singers, the abusive behavior of the chorus director, and the monumental societal pressures of the time.
