Renowned for her childhood stories, Amélie Nothomb, the daughter of a Belgian diplomat, has penned her Asian upbringing with an intriguing perspective in her book "Métaphysique des tubes" (The Character of Rain). Having spent a significant time believing herself to be God, the book provides a poetic interpretation of the young Nothomb’s peculiar imaginations, including seeing herself as a tube with food going in one end and coming out the other.

The movie adaptation of the book recently premiered at Cannes, with animation creating a visually appealing account of young Amélie’s world. Large portions of the book dedicated to detailing the mindset of a 2-year-old are engagingly portrayed in the animated film, highlighting the author’s unique experiences as a Westerner in Japan in the 1970s, amidst a delicate post-war history.

The filmmakers, Maïlys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han, artistically adapt Nothomb's childhood eccentricities into a film narrative, focusing on her formative memories. The movie also showcases Amélie's relationships with her family members and their Japanese housekeeper, Nishio-san, which forms the fulcrum of the narrative. These human connections aid her gradual understanding of the world, contributing to the movie’s magical vibes, and allowing audiences to take delight in the unusual insights of this uniquely precocious child.

The minimalist visual style by co-directors Vallade and Han elegantly complements the youthful character's innocence, recalling the artistic work of contributors like Remi Chayé and David Hockney. The animation, inspired by the iconic animations of Studio Ghibli, captures wartime Japan and its prolonged recovery period.

Throughout "Little Amélie", the audience sees the transformation of a girl from an endearing solipsist to an emotionally deep character, creating an ingenious epic of a quirky childhood tale.
