Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" Makes a Grand Debut in London
- Jul 15, 2026
"The Odyssey," Christopher Nolan's much-anticipated adaptation of Homer's epic poem dating back nearly 3,000 years, made a magnificent premiere in London on Monday. The event marked the official launch of what is projected to be one of the summer's most popular releases, a prospect Universal is keenly looking forward to, given the film's $250 million budget.
The first stop on the global tour of "The Odyssey" brought together an ensemble cast. Leicester Square glittered under the bright sun with celebrities, including Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong'o, and others on the blue, sea-themed carpet.
Speaking to Variety on the red carpet, Damon discussed his role as Trojan War hero Odysseus, detailing the unique challenges that shooting at different locations presented. Expressing relief and gratitude for not being a producer, Damon said, "Each location was challenging in a different way".
There is eager anticipation to see Hollywood's golden couple, Zendaya and Tom Holland, sharing the screen ahead of their upcoming Spider-Man release. Zendaya, visibly moved by Holland's performance, voiced her excitement for the audience to witness his versatile talent.

Charlize Theron praised Nolan's bravery for undertaking such a storyline, and John Leguizamo described the film as Nolan's "magnum opus". Rapper Travis Scott also expressed his awe of working with Nolan, comparing it to receiving a call from your favourite superhero.
Building on the success of Nolan’s previous offering, "Oppenheimer," which raked in more than $976 million globally before being surpassed by "Michael," there are high expectations for "The Odyssey." Its record-breaking premium large format pre-sales already hint at solid anticipation for the movie. This is the first film shot entirely on IMAX’s 70mm cameras, adding to the allure.
With the scale of cast and flood of ticket requests, Universal held another screening in London. Despite the director's humorous warning that the film might send viewers fast asleep after watching the late-night England vs Mexico World Cup match, anticipation for the release remains high.
"The Odyssey" is slated for its release on July 17.
