Russell Crowe Flexes Comedy Muscles in 'The Get Out'
- Jun 25, 2026
Esteemed actor Russell Crowe, known for his serious and dramatic roles, reveals a lighter side in the recent comic noir-thriller, 'The Get Out'. As an aging nightclub owner considering retirement, Crowe's performance is engaging even when the film fails to deliver.
'The Get Out,' set in Los Angeles but filmed on Australia's Gold Coast, introduces its audience to club owner Manco Kapac (Crowe) via voiceover. Kapac's plans for retirement are hastened by a heart attack during a passionate encounter with his younger girlfriend, Sunny (Teresa Palmer). After being mugged, Kapac resolved to sell his club to Joe (Luke Evans), a colourful character infamous for conducting business during a massage and woefully performing Elvis Presley's 'Suspicious Minds' in karaoke sessions.
The plot thickens when it is revealed that the thief who robbed Kapac is a university professor named Jeff (Aaron Paul). Blackmailed by a corrupt police officer and a bank teller with a penchant for criminal activities, Jeff's life quickly spirals into chaos.

While 'The Get Out' tries to emulate influences ranging from Elmore Leonard to Quentin Tarantino, it falls short in blending suspense with humor. The movie's main success comes from Crowe's solemn portrayal of Kapac, who resorts to meditation to cope with the stress and Dobrev's enthusiastic performance as Carrie, the eager would-be criminal.
'The Get Out', although quickly forgotten, is a light-hearted diversion that will find acclaim on streaming platforms due to a star-studded and well-known cast. It's worth watching right till the end credits roll for the soulful Gipsy King's rendition of the Eagles' classic track, 'Hotel California'.
