Antonin Baudry's film "De Gaulle: Résistance" is a grandiose and energetically French production which exudes all the qualities of a classic Hollywood blockbuster. Presented as a biopic on one of France's great leaders, the film focuses on Charles De Gaulle's experiences as an exiled general during the early 1940s, showing his romanticized vision of a France that had just surrendered to Germany.

The film is more than a mere portrait of De Gaulle; it also shines a light on the life of Fernand Bonnier de La Chapelle, an impassioned member of the French resistance and a foe of the Vichy regime. The story smartly intertwines both narrative threads, involving both the zealously patriotic de Gaulle and the idealistic yet tragic tale of de La Chapelle, showcasing the varying aspects of French resistance during World War II.

Opening with a particularly poignant scene of de La Chapelle listening intently to his radio as the reality of France's defeat sinks in, the film gradually reveals the contrasting elements of these two main characters, who despite their differences, share guiding principles. Simon Abkarian capably plays the resolute, yet understandably unsure De Gaulle, while Florian Lesieur deftly portrays the youthful vigor and delicate idealism of Bonnier de La Chapelle.

Featuring exciting narratives of rebellion, power relationships, and political gamesmanship, the film is punctuated by moments of comic relief, particularly in the tense yet amusing dynamic between De Gaulle and Churchill. Despite some trappings common to historical movies, including occasionally heavy-handed dialogue and the paradoxical foresight of historical characters, the film manages to succinctly depict a defining era of French history.

"De Gaulle: Résistance" is a riveting war drama that provides fresh perspectives on the past while throwing subtle light on the resurgence of fascism in the modern world. The film's gripping narrative, coupled with its introspective exploration of patriotism, hints at potential international acclaim. Audiences can look forward to the second installment of Baudry's project, "De Gaulle: Liberté", set to open in France this summer.
