Firefly Lane season two, episode 9, opens with Kate anticipating her future journey to Europe with Theo. She burns her ass in a sunbathing accident. Johnny arrives and presents her with a lovely gift before she departs. He wished her a wonderful trip and endless joy with Theo.

1970s

Tully and Kate must prepare the Cloud and house for a parole officer visit. That includes escorting Cloud's buddies who are intoxicated or high from the residence. But Leon, one of them, looks to have overdosed. The two teenagers bury his body under the stairs in a cabinet out of panic.

The parole officer is appropriately impressed when Cloud manages to gather herself. The great news is that Leon wakes up shortly after the officer leaves, proving that he is not actually dead. Kate and Tully are overjoyed to have knocked it off and avoid jail time for concealing a body. Cloud then reminded everyone that this was only the first of several parole visits, which somewhat dulled the mood.

2000s

It's Thanksgiving, and the girls will be spending it apart for the first time. While Tully prepares a horrible Thanksgiving dinner for Cloud, Kate and her family visit their parents. When Dan joins them, they decide to get pizza.
The cuisine is much better, and Johnny proposes to Kate at Mularkey's place. She declines him because she fears they will divorce again. The evening went relatively smoothly until Kate saw her father unconscious in the living room. Sadly, her father passes away while watching TV after dinner.

Kate requests that Tully leave when she arrives for his funeral. Tully chooses to travel back to Firefly Lane, where she grew up. Even though Kate misses Tully, she chooses not to get in touch with her and wants to put their friendship behind her.

While Tully renovates and learns to cook, Kate enrolls in writing classes and meets a new acquaintance. They have another Thanksgiving after a year has passed, and this time Tully makes a delicious meal and invites Cloud, Dan, and his partner to the house on Firefly Lane. She makes a choice to give Cloud the place.

Dan begs Tully to think about returning to work and invites her to see his buddy, who is filming a documentary about global warming. Tully assures him that she's going to give it some thought. The Mullarkey family pays respect to Kate's father, Bud, and Margie informs Kate that Tully has returned to Firefly Lane, but Kate chooses to ignore her.

Tully chooses to meet Dan's acquaintance on campus. Kate is enrolled in writing courses. They cross paths, but they behave strangely. After meeting Henry, a friend of Dan's, Tully makes an instant decision to accept the assignment, which will need the team to spend several months in isolation in Antarctica.

Kate accepts Johnny's re-proposal during the Christmas season. She gives her a call to share the good news with her new friend. But, she doesn't respond as she had intended. She understands no one can take Tully's place.

She also notices a rash on her breast. After seeing a doctor, she learns that she has stage 3 inflammatory breast cancer, a rare and dangerous illness. She must immediately begin treatment. She goes to Tully's apartment after leaving her doctor's appointment, but she is not there.
