Horror Film "Weapons" Gets Innovative Fortnite Promotion Ahead of Release
- Aug 9, 2025
The upcoming horror film "Weapons," releasing August 8, is amping up its promotional efforts through a unique integration with the popular online video game, Fortnite. As of 12 P.M ET, the elements from the movie, helmed by Zach Cregger, are appearing across several Fortnite modes, including “Troll Bed Wars,” “Warrior Tycoon,” “Easy Parkour” and “Drive City.”
"Weapons" is a contemporary horror endeavour that focuses on a community's response to the unexplained disappearance of a classroom of students, with Julia Garner playing the accused teacher. This involves an intriguing mix of gameplay and the film's disturbing tension, introduced through Fortnite's different modes. Players will come across in-game clues, eerie environments, and time-sensitive challenges linked to the movie's central theme.
The creative agency and production studio, Sawhorse, designed the integration. They described the “2:17 AM” event, slated at the said time in the UTC time zone, as "an eerie timestamp" that establishes a connection with the film’s mystery. "This incredible collaboration is a paradigm of how studios like Warner Bros. are pushing the boundaries beyond the conventional trailers," commented Nic Hill, co-founder, and Head of Interactive at Sawhorse.

The world of cinema has seen several instances of such collaborations, reflecting the versatility Epic Games' Unreal Engine provides. The engine facilitates the easy creation and implementation of promotional campaigns, further reinforcing their value in the strategy for major films and shows.
Josh Brolin also stars in "Weapons," which operates on a comparatively conservative production budget of $38 million than its predecessor, "Sinners." Yet, it marks a significant step up for Cregger, who previously directed "Barbarian," produced under a modest budget of $4 million and accumulated nearly $50 million.
Notwithstanding, the success of horror films remains unpredictable, as evidenced by the underperformance of "M3GAN 2.0" in June. Yet, Warner Bros. continues to ride a wave of success with hits like "A Minecraft Movie" and "Superman" released earlier this year. The Fortnite integration of "Weapons" was also executed in collaboration with Sawhorse's marketing partner, Chartis.
