'Kesari Chapter 2': The Art of Legal Drama and Patriotism in Indian Cinema
- May 2, 2025
In 'Kesari Chapter 2: The Untold Story of Jallianwala Bagh', a powerful legal drama welcomed for its grand theatric performances, Akshay Kumar beautifully revisits his role as a savior and patriot. The character, C. Sankaran Nair, portrayed by Kumar, uses elaborate theatrics and powerful speeches to revolt against British policies. This takes place even in the face of warnings from characters like a judge who seems to miss that grand dramatisations are a fundamental aspect of Indian cinema's favored genre-legal drama.
The film sees the debut of director Karan Singh Tyagi, whose emphasis on impact transcends historical facts or authenticity. Kumar's character, a Malayali, is introduced as a loyalist of the Crown. However, witnessing the horrors at Jallianwala Bagh sparks an existential crisis, turning him into a fearless freedom fighter. Kumar's portrayal of this character presents a vulnerable, broken, yet determined man who harbors a deep-seated passion for his country, regardless of the little he does to encapsulate the 1920s ambiance.
The character, Sankaran Nair, holds an impressive historical record as a renowned lawyer, statesman, and the sole Indian on the Viceroy's Executive Council. The depiction of Nair's legal battle against Michael O’Dwyer over the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 'Kesari Chapter 2' is a fictionalized interpretation extracted from The Case That Shook the Empire: One Man's Fight for the Truth About the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre.

The film also offers an interesting opponent to Nair in R. Madhavan’s character as Neville McKinley, an Anglo-Indian lawyer turned alcoholic. Despite the superficial writing, Madhavan's portrayal of gray characters is enjoyable to watch. The plot takes liberties with the ease of collecting evidence and interjects with unnecessary plot points such as a nightclub number. However, the storytelling successfully captures the audience's heart with the story of a young boy who becomes a victim of the massacre, and Panday's notable performance as a resilient lawyer.
'Kesari Chapter 2' captures the compelling story of a man's brave stand against an empire, albeit only occasionally. While largely a broad-stroke instrument, the film hits the target where it matters, provided the audience does not scrutinize for detailed historical accuracy.
