Marvel Sets Tentative Release Calendar for 2028 with Focus on Quality

The Comic-Con event held by Marvel Studios created a buzz with the revelation of two significant releases slated for the 2028 lineup - "Black Panther 3" introducing David Jonnson as T'Challa II/Toussaint, and "Ghost Rider" showcasing Ryan Gosling. The only other Marvel films set for release before 2028 are "Spider-Man: Brand New day", "Avengers: Doomsday" and "Avengers: Secret Wars", with the latter being the sole release for 2027.

Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios' head, explained this limited calendar in a Comic-Con interview with Empire magazine, stating that the approach is centered on delivering quality over quantity. Feige commented on the significance of the Avengers, as well as "Secret Wars" serving as a bridge to future productions, including the already-announced "Ghost Rider" and "Panther III".

Alongside these films, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to expand with new content on Disney+. The launch of the “VisionQuest” TV series in October marks one of four Marvel titles releasing in a span of two years. This signifies a stark reduction from Marvel's previous volume of releases.

Feige acknowledged that Marvel's recent expansive movement into streaming content on Disney+ was an example of prioritizing quantity over quality. A sentiment echoed by former Disney CEO Bob Iger, who pointed to the diversion of attention and resources towards TV series as a reason behind the less-than-stellar critical and financial performance in 2023-2024.

Currently, Marvel Studios is developing a new iteration of the X-Men but hasn't declared a release date. Present at Comic-Con, Feige announced that the forthcoming "Ghost Rider" movie featuring Ryan Gosling was finalized after Gosling’s compelling pitch. Directed by Shawn Levy who has worked with Gosling on the forthcoming “Star Wars: Starfighter”, both Star Wars and Marvel come under the umbrella of the Disney franchise.
