In a bid to revive the 80's beloved media franchise, a new live-action "Masters of the Universe" film is on the cards, approximately four decades after its original release by Cannon Films. A slew of revivals across the years including comics, toy lines, and Netflix animated content seem to have kept the franchise faintly breathing, despite its original failure. The new version of the film is expected to be grand in all aspects, targeting the new generation audience and catering to the nostalgia of the old ones.

The focus of the incoming project by Travis Knight is to ridicule the film's own outdated cool, almost feeling apologetic about its existence. The film straddles between being an earnest tribute and an ironic mockery, struggling to balance the nostalgic elements and modern sensibilities. While the movie overstays its welcome, clocking in over two hours, it does have its moments, largely due to charismatic performances, particularly that of Nicholas Galitzine, known for his roles in "Bottoms" and "100 Nights of Hero".

Masters of the Universe Returns: A Bitter Sweet Nostalgia Trip

The plot revolves around prince Adam, living as an ordinary earthling, who's searching for his lost Sword of Power that can return him to his home planet Eternia. Things become less exciting when Adam regains control of his powers, and the movie ends up being a series of spanned-out fight scenes, punctuated occasionally with humor.

Despite its shortcomings, the film offers moments of amusement and occasional flashes of architectural brilliance in its production design, while celebrating the plasticeur fantasy world of the original franchise through its score. However, the adaptation doesn’t quite manage to truly resonate with its viewers, failing to invoke any fond memories from the past. The older audience that recognizes the elements of the story might find the film a dragged reminder and the younger ones might wonder what all the fuss was about the He-Man in the first place.
