New Adventure for the Reagans in "Boston Blue", CBS's Latest Spinoff

CBS introduces a fresh take on the Reagan family saga through the “Blue Bloods” spinoff, “Boston Blue.” Creators Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis set the stage in Boston, where former NYPD Detective Danny Reagan, acted by Donnie Wahlberg, finds a fresh start to connect with his son, Sean (Mika Amonsen), now a local patrol cop. In Boston, the Reagans deal with the established Silver family, law enforcement stalwarts led by Lena Silver, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, Danny's new partner. “Boston Blue” successfully grows the “Blue Bloods” world into a new locale while retaining its core appeal.

Opening scenes feature Sean and his friend Jonah Silver (Marcus Scribner) witnessing a building in flames. Fresh from police academy, they run into danger but soon find themselves out of their depth. After a rescue attempt leads to casualty and Sean's severe injury, news reaches Danny, who rushes to Boston. This leads him to cross paths with Boston Detective Lena Silver as they both have a stake in the ensuing investigation.

Despite the legacy of a 14-year run of “Blue Bloods,” “Boston Blue” already exhibits signs of standing its ground. Lena's own powerful family connection to Boston's District Attorney Mae (Gloria Reuben), stepsister Sarah (Maggie Lawson) a BPD superintendent, and grandfather, Reverend Edwin Peters (Ernie Hudson) all add to the textured storyline.

The Boston precinct doesn't only deal with heinous crimes but also confronts timely issues. In the opening episodes, a problematic facial recognition software that discriminately targets people of color, creates challenges, followed by Sarah's struggle in Episode 2 to balance professional and personal relationships with police colleagues.

As the drama unfolds with each weekly episode, the integration of the Reagans and the Silvers and the exploration of the Boston scene promises an exciting journey for the audience. With the Reagans present and the addition of the Silvers, the series is poised to captivate viewers in the long run.

“Boston Blue” will premiere on Oct. 17 on CBS, with new episodes being released weekly on Fridays.
